INTRODUCTION

From the ancient to the modern, Doris Leslie Blau weaves a unique web of creativity through our new and custom designed rugs.   At the forefront of our business is our recognition that a rug or carpet is often the most integral element of any interior; its placement in a room can be likened to the introduction of a painting into a space—it gives the room a personality.  In light of the importance of floor imagery, Doris Leslie Blau Gallery is committed to assisting our clients in finding the perfect antique or bespoke rug.

As a current market leader, we have been a major destination for custom and new rugs for nearly a decade.  Within this segment of the rug market our main endeavor has been to offer our clientele the most beautiful and comprehensive selection of unique and eco-friendly custom rug options.  Whether in search of an Italian garden-inspired pattern, a twist on an 18th century design, a sophisticated modern design, or a playful interpretation to match a quirky color scheme, we are confident in our ability to create an appropriate rug to fit the personality of any room.  When designing a custom rug the client has complete freedom personalize the rug by changing the size, color, shape, design, material, and technique to suit their needs.  We have an extensive range of designs that can be customized or we can utilize any patterns or colors presented to us to create a truly one-of-a kind rug.  For this service we advise our clients every step of the way—from creating dyes to match any color to producing samples of the designs.

Tibetan rugs:

If the quality of the weaving is of the utmost importance for a new rug, we recommend choosing one of our custom wool and silk Tibetan rug designs.  Hand-dyed and woven high in the Himalayas in Nepal, our Tibetan rugs are created in the traditions of the ancient weavers of the Tibetan plateau with both loop and cut piles, yet they have avant-garde designs that speak to a modern sensibility.  Tibetan carpets at Doris Leslie Blau can be ordered in an array of exclusive yarns, colors and weave techniques.

Our Tibetan rugs are all created in an eco-friendly and socially responsible manner.  The completed rugs are gently hand washed in cleaned and softened groundwater, which ensures that the natural resilience of the Tibetan wool yarn is preserved.  Following this process, the waste water is carefully treated to be rendered non-toxic and is then returned to the ground system.  All of our rugs are made in compliance with the conditions for fair labor practices as outlined by the international non-profit supervisory enterprise, Care & Fair, which promotes education, benevolent working conditions, medical care, and prohibits child labor.

Samarkand rugs:

Within our new and custom collection we have a broad selection of Samarkand rugs generally made in unusually large sizes.  Sumptuous in nature and appearance some of our Samarkand rugs are woven with recycled strands of wool from early central Asian Kilims.  This eco-friendly blending of the old with the new conveys a sensual quality of the color and the weave that is unique within the rug industry.

Designer Collections:

Over the past few years Doris Leslie Blau Gallery has periodically invited renowned interior designers and architects to design their own custom carpets for our collection using the finest wool, silk and natural fibers.  Alberto Pinto, Jed Johnson Associates, Mariette Himes Gomez, Amy Lau, Miles Redd are among the well-known designers who have created patterns for our collection.  Rug designs have also been created by fashion designers such as Nanette Lepore and Tommy Hilfiger.  With our new and designer collections we strive to bring a sophisticated and creative modern eye to rug design through eclectic and abstract patterns, subtle colors and sometimes even a sense of whimsy or humor.  Although many of our designer rugs are abstract with a tendency toward solid colors, many of them subtly recall elements of traditional weaving such as in their incorporation of organic forms of branches and flowers of antique Oriental rugs or even by deriving inspiration from works of art in the manner of more modern early 20th century rugs.

Period-Inspired Rugs:

Among our custom rug options and in our current inventory, our period-inspired rugs have either been inspired by or closely reproduce antique or vintage rug designs.  From architectural Aubusson carpets and all-over floral Sultanabad rugs to abstract modern designs and relaxed graphic Moroccans, our period-inspired rugs are beautiful, refreshing, and durable.  Available in various colors, qualities and techniques, each of the period-inspired rugs captures the history behind the design.

The vastness of our weaves and techniques for period-inspired rugs and our ability to capture many design inspirations often makes a period-inspired rug an excellent choice for a designer who cannot find the perfect antique rug due to its size, color or pattern or who cannot choose an original antique rug due to budget limitations.

Materials & Techniques:

We are constantly exploring new textures and pile lengths for almost all of our designs.  Whether producing a hand-tufted, high-low, or flat-woven rug, we constantly encourage our clients to collaborate with us as part of our team of designers, textile artists, and factories to locate the correct fibers and techniques to enhance our design patterns.  Chosen with the utmost care, the custom artisan rugs are made to celebrate the beauty and integrity of the natural materials and are individually crafted to the highest standards.

In addition to the custom options described above, we also have a diverse selection of new rugs for sale, which also serve as excellent samples of some of our custom designs.   Whether you choose a new or custom rug, we are confident in the durability of the rug to withstand decades of use and we are confident that its Doris Leslie Blau Gallery pedigree will only increase the value of your rug over time.

“Rugs are the foundation of any beautiful room and Doris has the ability to act as a medium in translating client narratives into a personal woven expression of their dreams and identities.”-- Paul Vincent Wiseman of The Wiseman Group, Interior Design, Inc, San Francisco, CA.
